What made you decide to be a designer?
The rise of digital art on social media and just being a natural creative! My hobby has been drawing and painting since I was able to put pen to paper. It makes me happy to help others by doing what I love.
Do you prefer to work independently or as part of a team?
I have worked with both circumstances, but I prefer to take on projects by myself or with a smaller group. I find that communication works best with fewer heads, but open critique is imperative, especially remotely.
What do you think the next big design trend will be?
Simple geometric shapes and psychedelic style. As the 70's style resurfaces, along with the leap in spiritual consumption and retro psychedelia, we will see these patterns unfold in branding and media. I believe visuals and wording will feel more organic and surreal, breaking away from orthodox, patriarchal norms. A futuristic, yet retro feel.
What do you do to improve your design skills?
At least once daily, I scroll through my art Instagram feed. I make sure to follow good artists. I then save posts that are valuable to my inspiration and design knowledge in a monthly folder. At the end of the month, I print and collage each design, and I read each saved post. My collage book is on my desk at all times, and is used as a quick reference when I'm in a rut.
How do you handle negative feedback?
As a design student, I have been placed in intimidating critique circles. I learned that every one of my viewed designs improved drastically by simply communicating with others. Being a good designer includes getting ideas and asking questions from multiple sources.
What's your favorite project that you've worked on?
Any time I get to totally rebrand a small business. Seeing its online presence go from looking not-so-credible to professional is the best feeling. Eye-catching design is so relevant in marketing to this generation!
